Keeping roads and highways safe is critically. In addition to autumn’s and winter’s perils, the increase of weather fluctuations and extreme weather events throughout the year pose further challenges to road decision-makers. Ideally, a dense network of road weather monitoring stations reliably provides accurate, hyper-local data. Wherever that is not feasible, be it due to […]
To ensure safe travel on a ramp, the Swiss company Migros built a heater into the roadway winding to the parking deck of its distribution center in Zurich. Frost and snow thus had no chance. Thanks to a smart yet simple roadway monitoring system from OTT HydroMet, Migros was able to reduce energy consumption by over 80% while keeping traffic safe.
Low visibility is a major root cause for traffic accidents and thus a significant safety risk. Meteorological phenomena as fog, snow and, in desert areas, sandstorms are very dynamic and often limited to a small area. In this episode, three road weather experts share their experience on traffic-impacting meteorological events and individual regional properties.
2021 is slowly passing by. Scrolling through the articles we’ve published throughout the year reflects the trends and challenges in the meteorological community. From new airport weather guidelines to innovative sensor technologies to deep dives on wind and solar radiation measurements – these are our five most read articles of 2021.
A new guideline standardizes the assessment of runway conditions at airports. The international Global Reporting Format (ICAO GRF) helps pilots to better assess conditions on the runway. Hamburg Airport is the first German airport to meet the safety standard with an innovative solution from OTT HydroMet. To increase air traffic safety, the International Civil Aviation […]
Optical sensors convert rays of light to electronic signals which can be utilized by different measurement principles. They offer the possibility of contactless measurement and are easy to install. Lufft sensors are used around the world because of their efficiency, ease of use, and minimal disturbance to the immediate environment. The versatility of the optical measurement […]
With winter approaching, road maintenance services prepare and check their equipment for the challenging season to come. Typical work consists of calibrating sensors and exchanging single modules, but after some years in operation, the whole station needs to be renewed. Caltrans, the California Department of Transportation, used this opportunity to choose devices and services from […]
Winter services save lives. They use salt spreaders and snow plows to ensure safe roads as soon as the days get shorter and colder and detect the road condition with real-time measurements. In a pilot project, the Technical Services Offenburg (TBO) show how their database can be improved with little effort. It is a bus […]
Although there are not many signs of winter at the beginning of this year, the technical department from Offenburg (TBO) have been in operation for a long time, the constant changes in the weather conditions show that the number of inspection trips is constantly high. Winter road maintenance in a district town is a challenging and […]
A recent research project of the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) aimed to develop a method for predicting the friction coefficient on the road. To achieve this, the team of the university’s automotive engineering section carried out extensive braking tests. For this, an important technical aid from Lufft mustn’t be left out. What influences […]
