New accessory: PMU485 Smart Setup Hub

PV Plant Sunset

The PMU485 Smart Setup Hub connecting your PC to any Smart Kipp & Zonen instrument. Kipp & Zonen not only designs high quality Smart solar radiation measuring instruments, but we also try to make your life easier. With PMU485 we launch an all-in-one 12 VDC power source and RS-485 to USB converter to power and communicate with our Modbus® RTU instruments. Just connect the instrument cable to the PMU485 by screw terminals, plug into a PC/laptop USB port and run our SmartExplorer Software. Now you can see and/or log live readings, or change communications settings; such as the Modbus address/ID or baud rate.

How does the PMU485 Smart Setup Hub make your life easier?

It has a built-in 2-wire RS-485 to USB 2.0 converter, which controls the data connection, and comes with a 1.5 m cable. You won’t find a power switch on PMU485, connect it to an active USB port and the converter will start. There are LED indicators for USB power, data transmit and data receive.

There is an internal DC-DC converter to step-up 5VDC from the PC USB port to 12 VDC to power the connected instrument, no separate power adapter is needed.

SmartExplorer can communicate with up to 10 instruments connected in parallel if they have been set to different Modbus® addresses.

SMP, SHP, SGR, SUV, PR1, PH1 and RT1 only take about 4 mA each and any PC USB port can easily supply the power for up to 10 of these.

DustIQ requires more power and peaks at 400 mA. In case this is beyond the load of a USB port with limited current capability the PMU485 has an internal Lithium-ion battery to boost the current to the DC-DC converter. This battery is recharged by the USB port when the load reduces. Only one DustIQ can be powered at a time.

Together with our SmartExplorer software you can use PMU485 to test your Smart instrument, configure its communication settings, view live data and log it to a drive of the PC. PMU485 is intended for use as an installation or service tool to set up and test a device and its communication parameters. It is not weatherproof and is not designed for outdoor use or permanent installations.

  • Just one USB connection
  • 12 VDC power source
  • RS-485 data
  • Modbus® RTU communication with SmartExplorer software
  • Works with all Kipp & Zonen Smart instruments and DustIQ

PMU485 is an OEM product designed for, and marketed by, Kipp & Zonen.
