The product of choice is a Lufft WS601, that provides comprehensive measurements of relevant weather information including precipitation.<\/p><p>Weather watchers have been installed along the West Coast main line and across parts of the North West.<\/p><p>Network Rail has installed the weather watchers to ensure engineers can act swiftly before extreme weather events ensuring passengers and freight continue to move rapidly. The \u00a31.3m investment gives staff and response teams access to real-time data allowing any issues to be fixed quickly.<\/p><h3>Comprehensive weather monitoring with Lufft WS601<\/h3><p>The scientific surveillance stations measure:<\/p><ul><li>Wind gust &amp; direction<\/li><li>Air temperature<\/li><li>Dew point<\/li><li>Relative humidity<\/li><li>Wind speed &amp; direction<\/li><li>Rain fall totals (precipitation rate &amp; accumulation)<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.1px;\">In future the data gathered will allow Network Rail to identify which parts of the rail network are most susceptible to inclement weather.<\/span><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-94cedd6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-testimonial\" data-id=\"94cedd6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"testimonial.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-content\">\u201cDuring stormy weather we can send our response teams to where they\u2019re most needed which will help us to reduce disruption and keep passengers safe.\u201d<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-meta\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-meta-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-details\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-name\">Talisa Fletcher<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-job\">Network Rail Service Delivery Manager<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6cf195c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6cf195c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.1px;\">Network Rail emphasised how the new technology will help Network Rail reduce disturbance from extreme weather events.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.1px;\">Talisa Fletcher, Network Rail Service Delivery Manager said: \u201cOur solar powered weather stations will help us to better understand weather patterns.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.1px;\">During stormy weather we can send our response teams to where they\u2019re most needed which will help us to reduce disruption and keep passengers safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>Extreme weather has caused more than 400 days worth of delays in Network Rail\u2019s North West and Central Region since 2015.<\/p><h3>First summer in operation revealed rail temperatures above 50 \u00b0C<\/h3><p>However, the system&#8217;s benefits are not limited to stormy weather with strong winds or rains. During its first summer in operation, the monitoring system revealed rail temperatures of 50 \u00b0C and more. Based on the atmospheric measurements conducted by the Lufft weather sensors, the rails tend to hover around 20 degrees above the surrounding air temperature, <a href=\"https:\/\/quadrant-transport.com\/how-will-hi-tech-weather-stations-help-reduce-rail-delays\/\">Quadrant Transport<\/a> reports.
