Although there are not many signs of winter at the beginning of this year,\u00a0<\/span>the <\/span>technical department<\/span> from <\/span>Offenburg<\/span> (<\/span>TBO)<\/span> have been in operation for a long time, the constant changes in the weather conditions show that the number of inspection trips is constantly high.<\/span><\/p>

<\/p>

Winter road maintenance in a district town is a<\/span> challenging<\/span> and responsible <\/span>task<\/span>. As <\/span>the <\/span>technical department<\/span> from <\/span>Offenburg<\/span> (<\/span>TBO), <\/span>a town in Germany, <\/span>we ensure safety on 160 <\/span>kilometers<\/span> of roads, cycle paths and footpaths. <\/span>Although<\/span> there are not many signs of winter <\/span>at the beginning of this year<\/span>, we have been in operation for a long time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The constant changes in our weather conditions show that the number of inspection trips is <\/span>constantly high, even in the absence of regular snowfall<\/span>. Especially in our region on the southern Upper Rhine<\/span> (<\/span>in<\/span> the river<\/span> valley<\/span>)<\/span>, <\/span>fog causes<\/span> a<\/span> very high risk for <\/span>the <\/span>drivers<\/span>. Most of the time it comes unexpectedly and forms slippery frost during prolonged cold weather.<\/span><\/p>

Reliable live measurement data from the road\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3>

Our claim is to guarantee safe road conditions with our approximately 70 employees and various types of vehicles. Since 2018 we have been using MARWIS<\/a>, the mobile road weather sensor from Lufft, on all our vehicles. The MARWIS<\/a> provides the necessary data directly from the road, <\/span>based on<\/span> which we determine the operational plan. Both the driver and the winter service management can view the current road conditions in real time and assess within minutes whether further action is necessary or where the most urgent need for action exists.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

T<\/span>o make the 4 a.m. briefing as <\/span>efficient <\/span>as possible<\/span>, w<\/span>e have developed a traffic light system<\/span>.\u202fIf the traffic light turns red in a district, our employees set off on their way to full deployment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Responsible use of road salt\u00a0<\/h3>

Environmental protection is very important to us. Therefore, our principle is: As little road salt as possible, but as much as necessary<\/a><\/span>. <\/span>T<\/span>he safety of our citizens has absolute priority. In order to ensure this principle, the evaluation via MARWIS helps us<\/span> enormously<\/span>. We only spread<\/span> salt<\/span> where there is an acute danger of slippery roads. <\/span>I<\/span>t happens<\/span>, for instance,<\/span> that a main road in the city <\/span>center<\/span> is<\/span> significantly warmer temperatures than <\/span>the surface of a<\/span> village street<\/span> outside the center<\/span>. Thanks to mobile measurement, we can track this almost in real time and take appropriate action.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Climate change and technical innovation coming with digitalization <\/span>are keeping us busy.
