Adverse weather conditions, such as fog or heavy snowfall, can further impair the driver&#8217;s visibility and increase the risk of an accident. In this context, it is critical that limited visibility leads to particularly serious accidents.<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_19900\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19900\" style=\"width: 542px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19900 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogottprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Vs2k_2-542x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19900\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">VS2k Visibility sensor in fog situation in a snow-covered environment<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In order to increase road safety, especially in night-time fog situations, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-lab.de\/llab\/index.html\">the L-LAB in Lippstadt<\/a> is researching how headlamps can be optimized for adverse weather conditions. The L-LAB lighting laboratory is a research facility for automotive lighting run by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hella.com\/hella-com\/de\/index.html\"> HELLA GmbH &amp; Co. KGaA<\/a> together with the University of Paderborn and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hshl.de\/forschung-unternehmen\/kooperationen-innovationen\/l-lab\/\">the Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences<\/a>.<\/p><p>In the research project the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lufft.com\/products\/visibility-present-weather-sensors-290\/visibility-sensor-vs2k-umb-2298\/\"><strong> VS2k visibility sensor from Lufft<\/strong><\/a> is used. The sensor measures visibility precisely up to 2000 m and is therefore ideal for applications in traffic research. High-resolution prototype headlights from HELLA GmbH &amp; Co. KGaA allow a flexible adjustment of the light distribution. Thus, different parameters of the light distribution can be varied and their influence on the visibility can be tested. The visibility that is measured with the VS2k is included in the evaluation of the test data.
