B<\/span><span class=\"hps\">etween<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">three<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">seven cases end <\/span><span class=\"hps\">fatal.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">The risk<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is particularly high<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the open field<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is<\/span> fortunately decreasing. <span class=\"hps\">The<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">reason for this is that<\/span> we stay <span class=\"tag_trans\">more often <\/span>inside in cars and buildings <span class=\"hps\">where<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">almost all<\/span> areas are <span class=\"hps\">protected by <\/span><\/span><span class=\"tag_trans\">lightning arresters <span class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">than outside.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How do thunderstorms and lightnings develop at all?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"hps\">Clouds<\/span> are <span class=\"hps\">formed when<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">moist air<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">rises<\/span>, which was <span class=\"hps\">warmed up<\/span> <\/span><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">before <\/span><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">by the sun <span class=\"hps\">in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the lower<\/span> air <span class=\"hps\">layer<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">There, the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">air cools down<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">again<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and forms<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">tiny<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">droplets<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"hps\">If the water vapor troplets in the air rub present <\/span><span class=\"hps\">ice crystals<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">at high altitudes, <\/span><span class=\"hps\">thunderclouds (<\/span><span class=\"hps\">cumulonimbus)<\/span> are formed, <span class=\"hps\">because<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">positively and negatively charged<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">raindrops<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">separate<\/span> from each other. Through this, the cloud gets loaded <span class=\"hps\">electrostatically. <\/span>At some point, t<span class=\"hps\">he<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">voltage<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">discharges <\/span>in the form of <span class=\"hps\">a lightning bolt and <\/span>the <span class=\"hps\">heavy<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">ice crystals<\/span> falling <span class=\"hps\">to the earth as hail or rain. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><strong><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"hps\">Solar panels, wind<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">turbines<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and power lines<\/span>: <span class=\"hps\">helplessly exposed<\/span>?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"hps\">For<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">power lines<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">wind turbines<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">photovoltaic plants, <\/span><span class=\"hps\">lightning strikes<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">have serious consequences<\/span>: They are <span class=\"hps\">exposed <\/span><span class=\"hps\">to them<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">almost<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">defenseless<\/span>. In case of lightning flashes <span class=\"hps\">causing <\/span><span class=\"hps\">surge<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">or even<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">fire<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">damages,<\/span> there&#8217;s <span class=\"hps\">usually<\/span> a <span class=\"hps\">lack of <\/span><span class=\"hps\">evidence for their origin <\/span><span class=\"hps\">&#8211;<\/span> a nightmare <span class=\"hps\">for<\/span> the plant operators <span class=\"hps\">who<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">depend<\/span> on their <span class=\"hps\">insurance<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and <\/span>face high <span class=\"hps\">economic losses<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"hps\">After all,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">nearly 20% of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">photovoltaic systems&#8217; damages<\/span> are <span class=\"hps\">caused by lightning<\/span> bolts.
