It will be held<\/span> at Munich Trade Fair <\/span>from October 6 <\/span>to 9<\/span> and<\/span> offers<\/span> an overview of all<\/span> new<\/span> airport<\/span> technologies<\/span> around the topics<\/span> Terminal<\/span>, Data<\/span>, Ramp<\/span> and Design<\/span>. Various<\/span> weather phenomena<\/span> play<\/span> a crucial role in<\/span> the smooth running<\/span> of airport operations<\/span>. These include<\/span> strong winds<\/span>, precipitation<\/span>, fog, smoke<\/span>, and other factors affecting<\/span> visual range<\/span> as well as <\/span>frost and snow<\/span>-related weather conditions<\/span>. According to<\/span> FAA<\/span>, 23 percent of<\/span> global<\/span> aviation accidents<\/span> are<\/span> weather influenced. <\/span>Also<\/span> flight delays<\/span> are often related to<\/span> the<\/span> weather<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The sensors<\/span> provided by Lufft can be integrated into<\/span> so-called<\/span> AWOS<\/span> (<\/span>automated airport<\/span> weather stations<\/span>) systems. This<\/span> in turn, serve<\/span> as a decision support<\/span> (<\/span>DSS) for the<\/span> airport<\/span> responsibles (e.g.<\/span> towers<\/span> and<\/span> pilots<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

At this year’s<\/span> Inter Airport<\/span> in<\/span> Munich, we<\/span> provide you with<\/span> various sensors<\/span> covering a wide variety<\/span> of relevant environmental<\/span> data<\/span>: the<\/span> innovative mobile<\/span> road weather<\/span> sensor<\/span> MARWIS<\/span><\/a>, the<\/span> stationary<\/span> surface<\/span> sensors<\/span> IRS31Pro<\/a>–<\/span> and<\/span> ARS31Pro<\/span><\/a>–<\/span>UMB, the<\/span> cloud height<\/span> sensor<\/span> CHM 15k<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> the<\/span> compact <\/span>weather <\/span><\/span>sensor<\/span><\/span> WS700<\/span><\/a>–<\/span>UMB.<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> laser-based<\/span> CHM 15k<\/span> Cloud<\/span> Height<\/span> sensor measures<\/span> up to 15<\/span> km into the sky <\/span>and<\/span> detects<\/span> up to nine different<\/span> cloud layers<\/span>. In addition, it <\/span>identifies<\/span> both<\/span> different<\/span> aerosol<\/span> layers<\/span> and<\/span> cirrus<\/span> clouds<\/span> with an optical density<\/span> of less than<\/span> 0.003<\/span> within 500 meters<\/span> layer<\/span> thickness<\/span>. It also creates<\/span> particle<\/span> backscatter<\/span> profiles<\/span>, an index on<\/span> sky<\/span> conditions<\/span> and assesses<\/span> the vertical<\/span> visibility<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> innovative mobile<\/span> road weather<\/span> sensor<\/span> MARWIS<\/a> scans<\/span> the<\/span> runway<\/span> <\/span>surfaces contactless\u00a0<\/span><\/span>up to 100 times<\/span> per second<\/span>.<\/span> It detects various<\/span> road condition<\/span> parameters such as<\/span>, the water film height of upt to <\/span>to six millimeters<\/span>, the road<\/span> temperature<\/span> and<\/span> ice percentages and calculates the<\/span> friction<\/span>. Due to its<\/span> mobility<\/span>, it covers measuring points<\/span> also where no fixed<\/span> runway sensors are available<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

For<\/span> stationary measurements, in<\/span> turn,\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span> road sensors<\/span> IRS31Pro<\/a><\/span>– and ARS31Pro<\/a>–<\/span>UMB can be used. They are embedded <\/span>into<\/span> the<\/span> runway<\/span> surface<\/span>. The active<\/span> ARS31Pro<\/a> detects the freezing temperature by\u00a0<\/span> using<\/span> a Peltier element<\/span> regardless of the<\/span> de-icing materials<\/span>. Supplemented by<\/span> the passive<\/span> road sensor<\/span> IRS31Pro<\/a><\/span>–<\/span>UMB, it measures, for example, up to four<\/span> millimeters<\/span> high water<\/span> films<\/span>, the salt concentration<\/span> and<\/span> the temperatures. Those<\/span> two<\/span> sensors combinde provide<\/span> reliable information about<\/span> weather conditions<\/span> on<\/span> runways<\/span>. And they are also easy to maintain: In order to facilitate the<\/span> maintenance<\/span> of the<\/span> invasive<\/span> probe<\/span>, their electronics<\/span> can be separated<\/span> from the chassis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> WS700<\/span><\/a>–<\/span>UMB weather<\/span> sensor measures<\/span> environment<\/span>al <\/span>weather data and covers a lot of measurement parameters. I<\/span>n<\/span> one single case with a<\/span> single cable<\/span> connection<\/span>, it combines sensors for detecting the<\/span> air temperature<\/span>, relative<\/span> humidity, precipitation<\/span> intensity<\/span>, precipitation<\/span>, rainfall<\/span>, air pressure, wind<\/span> direction, wind speed<\/span> and<\/span> global radiation at once<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

All<\/span> mentioned sensors<\/span> communicate<\/span> using<\/span> open protocols<\/span> such as<\/span> UMB<\/span>–<\/span>ASCII, UMB binary<\/span>, SDI<\/span>–<\/span>12, MODBUS<\/span> and<\/span> analog<\/span> using the <\/span><\/span>DACON<\/span><\/span><\/a> digital-analog<\/span> converter<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Accompanied<\/span> by<\/span> View<\/span><\/a>Mondo<\/span>, the<\/span> new<\/span> monitoring software<\/span>, the measuring<\/span> network<\/span> can be reached through an internet browser<\/span> from anyhere and<\/span> the measurement data<\/span> is<\/span> presented in a clearly arranged manner. Moreover, the new software <\/span>includes a<\/span> runway<\/span> Condition<\/span> Code<\/span> (<\/span>RCC) workflow<\/span>, which not only<\/span> digitized<\/span> the whole procedure but<\/span> also replaces rough estimations through reliable sensor data to determine the runway surface status.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Especially with regards to <\/span>the growing<\/span> air traffic<\/span>, the automatic and continuous<\/span> weather monitoring<\/span> connected<\/span> with<\/span> safety-related<\/span> decisions<\/span> at airports<\/span> will<\/span> be indispensable<\/span> in the future<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
