{"id":1003844,"date":"2014-05-09T00:00:23","date_gmt":"2014-05-08T22:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lufft.com\/?p=3844"},"modified":"2017-09-12T16:05:11","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T14:05:11","slug":"lufft-ws-series-of-smart-weather-sensors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.otthydromet.com\/en\/lufft-ws-series-of-smart-weather-sensors\/","title":{"rendered":"Lufft WS-Series of Smart Weather Sensors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Guest author\u00a0Austen Verrilli wrote in his blog entry about our history of weather monitoring, which translates to high quality weather sensing options &#8211; the Lufft WS-Series of Smart Weather Sensors!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3841\" alt=\"2014-05-lufft-wettersensor-ws-familie\" src=\"https:\/\/blogottprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/2014-05-lufft-wettersensor-ws-familie.jpg\" width=\"689\" height=\"341\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lufft WS-Series of Smart Weather Sensors:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A history of weather monitoring translates to high quality weather sensing options<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gotthilf Lufft started building mechanical weather sensors in 1881.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey really began by measuring temperature and humidity in the most basic sense,\u201d said Ann Pattison, Lufft USA product manager.<\/p>\n<p>More than 130 years later, the company is still building weather monitoring technology.<\/p>\n<p>For their most recent rendition of weather sensors, Lufft engineers traded mechanical dials and horse hair for ultrasonic transducers and pyrometers to create a line of electronic all-in-one weather sensors called the WS-Series.<\/p>\n<p>The systems have a modular formula that can be tailored to customer\u2019s applications. In fact, many of the ready-made combinations Lufft offers, like a weather sensor with built-in tipping bucket rain gauge, were inspired by customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re small enough that we are able to take in customer inputs,\u201d said Pattison.<\/p>\n<p>WS-Series weather sensors are designed to be fixed to a pole, rooftop or buoy to monitor weather conditions autonomously with the help of an accompanying data logger.<\/p>\n<p>Pattison said Lufft engineers listened to customers deploying the stations who said they needed the lowest power consumption possible. \u201cThe flexibility in communication and in the power consumption are a few things in which we pride ourselves,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Each weather sensor can communicate with a data logger through a wide variety of communications protocols, including SDI-12, RS-485 and ASCII.<\/p>\n<p>Most of Lufft\u2019s weather sensors have a wind-sensing top that uses ultrasonic sensors to measure wind speed and direction. The company offers a wide array of additional sensors including air temperature, air pressure, precipitation, humidity and sunlight sensors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lufft.com\/products\/compact-weather-sensors-293\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2721\" alt=\"WSx_Sensor-overview_\" src=\"https:\/\/blogottprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/WSx_Sensor-overview_.jpg\" width=\"576\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Product Overview of Smart Weather Sensors from the WS-Series<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lufft engineers designed WS-Series sensor packages based on common user applications.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Lufft WS501-UMB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lufft.com\/products\/compact-weather-sensors-293\/ws501-umb-smart-weather-sensor-1839\/\" target=\"_blank\">WS501<\/a> measures wind speed, direction, air pressure, humidity, air temperature and solar radiation. \u00a0The <a title=\"Lufft WS503-UMB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lufft.com\/products\/compact-weather-sensors-293\/ws503-umb-smart-weather-sensor-1837\/\" target=\"_blank\">WS503<\/a> measures the same parameters but has an adjustable pyrometer to measure solar radiation at an angle.<\/p>\n<p>Pattison said the pyrometers were added as an option so users can monitor sunlight to maximize the efficiency of solar panels. \u201cSolar projects need environmental monitoring to gather data of how sunny it is, so they can gauge the performance of their solar panels,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>A <a title=\"Lufft WT1 sensor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lufft.com\/products\/accessories-310\/remote-temperature-probe-wt1-2310\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lufft WT1 surface temperature sensor<\/a> can be added in line with any WS-Series weather sensor to monitor heat on solar panels and further gauge performance.<\/p>\n<p>Another feature of all the WS-Series wind sensors is a built-in compass. Pattison said the compass helps the ultrasonic wind sensor automatically orient during wind measurements. It can be especially helpful in determining wind direction on monitoring buoys.<\/p>\n<p>Both mechanical and electrical precipitation measurements are available in WS-Series weather sensors. The <a title=\"WS401-UMB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lufft.com\/products\/compact-weather-sensors-293\/ws401-umb-smart-weather-sensor-1841\/\" target=\"_blank\">WS401<\/a> and <a title=\"Lufft WS601\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lufft.com\/products\/compact-weather-sensors-293\/ws601-umb-smart-weather-sensor-1831\/\" target=\"_blank\">WS601<\/a> incorporate a tipping bucket rain gauge. It enables precise mechanical measurement of precipitation, while still being electronically integrated into a compact weather sensor. \u201cIt\u2019s nice because it\u2019s all integrated in that package with a digital interface,\u201d Pattison said.<\/p>\n<p>Lufft also offers weather sensors that measure precipitation with radar. Their <a title=\"Lufft WS600\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lufft.com\/products\/compact-weather-sensors-293\/ws600-umb-smart-weather-sensor-1832\/\" target=\"_blank\">WS600<\/a> and <a title=\"Lufft WS400\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lufft.com\/products\/compact-weather-sensors-293\/ws400-umb-smart-weather-sensor-1843\/\" target=\"_blank\">WS400<\/a> stations both electrically measure precipitation type, quantity and intensity.<\/p>\n<p>Each weather sensor is tested and calibrated prior to leaving Lufft\u2019s factory.
