Why rain is not just rain

There is no bad weather, there’s only inappropriate clothing. So says the North German, meaning that you can enjoy all kinds of weather, provided you are properly dressed. A drive in the rain is not one of the things you enjoy most, however, a good weather forecast can increase the driving pleasure.

There is no bad weather, there’s only inappropriate clothing. So says the North German, meaning that you can enjoy all kinds of weather, provided you are properly dressed. A drive in the rain is not one of the things you enjoy most, however, a good weather forecast can increase the driving pleasure. Anyone prepared to meet aquaplaning leaves, safer and more relaxed.

How to define rain?

Drizzling rain, light / fine drizzle, rain, sleet, freezing rain, steady rain (heavy rain) – there are various forms of rain. Some are fast, and they are fiercely over soon. Others take a long period or are mild. Depending on the type of rain the road infrastructure is affected. But how can one determine that exactly? LUFFT has developed a range of products to measure the droplet velocity and droplet size. Based on size and speed the amount of rainfall and rainfall intensity is then detected. The detection of the precipitation type (rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain, hail) is determined by the difference in rate of fall. This is performed by e.g. the radar rain sensor R2S-UMB or the all-in-one sensors WS400-UMB and WS600-UMB.

More information on safety

LUFFT sensors collect a number of important data, which provide for road safety, but also for the prediction of weather disasters or major agricultural weather data. The LUFFT sensors are compiled into an integrated system of sensors. The UMB sensor library provides a wide range of environmental sensors for temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, visibility and road conditions. Thus, for example the WS200-UMB compact weather station and the passive surface temperature sensor WST1 are merged into a single unit and thus provide comprehensive data on various environmental measures.
